What is the Heart of Discipleship?

The heart of discipleship can be summarized as "learn, love, and live". Colossians 1:28-29 includes the command to go and make disciples of all nations, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

Background of the book of Colossians: Paul wrote to warn against this false teaching and to encourage the believers in their growth toward Christian maturity. He emphasizes Christ’s authority over all evil powers.

What is discipleship?

First and foremost, discipleship is about proclaiming Jesus and making much of His name. We must have a heart to pursue Him. We need to be disciple to disciple others. God changes your perspective and transforms your heart for you to endure & accomplish a task.

Have you put yourself in His classroom to learn & understand Him more?

You may have been saved for a long time, but have you been a good disciple?

It requires our focus on Jesus. James mentions that God disciplines and matures His children by the testing & trial. Through all of this all our character will be made complete.

How can we present ourselves and others mature in Christ?

Step 1: Maturing by a sincere walk with HIM – Have a one-on-one relationship with Jesus.

Step 2: Love and to pursue the Lord more. Share Jesus with others. Being in Christ is the most amazing thing we can do.

Step 3: Toiling- laboring. It involves hard work, straining, striving and struggling.

Spiritual toil has an eternal reward. Only Christ’s love can push us to do this.

What do you toil for?

You don’t toil for something you don’t love. Are you toiling for good grades, for relationships, for a good living or loving the Lord and His people?

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS OF DISCIPLESHIP:

Discipleship invades your personal space. You may have to invite a person into your life. That’s what Jesus did to His disciples.

Pursue consistency

Walk in Christ together. Even if it is your own daughter, remember, she is a sister in Christ. Older women: learn to be gentle and a good listener.

Girls: Observe godly women and approach them. Ask questions and learn from them.

It is not our knowledge or skill that will develop disciples, but the power of God working within us. We must constantly acknowledge that before Him, prayerfully depend on Him, and never fall prey to trusting in our own abilities.
